SURF/SCR Workshop - 23/09/2010

In this harsh economic climate, regeneration practitioners are being challenged to provide even more convincing evidence and arguments to justify projects and interventions. In such an environment it can be useful to know 'what works' and how to put forward a balanced and robust case.

SURF and the Scottish Government’s Scottish Centre for Regeneration (SCR) are hosting this free joint workshop event to explore case study examples showing how arguments have been successfully made at local, regional and national perspectives.

Date and location

The workshop will take place on the morning of Thursday 23rd September in Aberdeen Arts Centre, which is centrally located on 33 King Street within a 10-15 minute walk of Aberdeen train station.

Key speakers

  • John Quinn, Head of Regeneration and Housing Investment, Aberdeen City Council
  • Sandy Murray, Chief Executive of Tenants First Housing Cooperative and lead partner for the successful Cafe Connect project in Faserburgh
  • A senior representative from Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company will highlight the importance of constructing a robust case for large-scale regeneration initiatives to regional, national and EU bodies.

Key questions for discussion

  • What do you consider to be the building blocks to presenting a balanced and robust argument for the support of regeneration activity? Who is the best person to make this case?
  • Does having reduced public investment in regeneration present any new opportunities or ways of thinking?
  • Are there any specific approaches or techniques from the case studies that you could adapt to suit your local context and help support your activity?
  • Has referencing case studies ever helped you strengthen an argument for resources for any of your regeneration activities? Do you know of any case studies that you think represent particularly good examples of cost-effective investment?
